October 7, 2025 — OpenAI has officially launched “Apps in ChatGPT,” a new framework that allows users to chat directly with apps inside ChatGPT, and a new Apps SDK that empowers developers to build their own interactive, conversational applications.

This marks a major leap forward in ChatGPT’s evolution — from a text-based assistant to a full-fledged app platform.

A New Generation of Conversational Apps

With Apps in ChatGPT, users can now interact with apps in a natural chat flow. You can call an app by name — for example,

“Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday”

—or ChatGPT can intelligently suggest relevant apps based on your conversation. If you’re discussing travel plans, ChatGPT might automatically surface the Booking.com or Expedia app, or if you’re house-hunting, it can pull up listings from Zillow right inside the chat window.

These apps blend familiar interactive elements (maps, playlists, presentations) with the fluidity of conversation — transforming ChatGPT into a dynamic, context-aware workspace.

Available Apps at Launch

OpenAI partnered with several global brands to roll out the first wave of apps:

  • Booking.com – Search and book hotels directly in chat

  • Canva – Turn text outlines into slide decks

  • Coursera – Take courses and ask real-time questions

  • Expedia – Plan trips conversationally

  • Figma – Collaborate on design projects

  • Spotify – Create and manage playlists

  • Zillow – Explore home listings interactively

More partners — including AllTrails, Peloton, OpenTable, Target, Uber, and TheFork — will be joining later this year.

Introducing the Apps SDK (Preview)

Developers can now start building their own ChatGPT apps using the Apps SDK, available in preview today.

The SDK is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — an open standard that allows ChatGPT to securely connect to external tools and data sources. With this SDK, developers can:

  • Define both the logic and the interface of their apps

  • Integrate directly with their backends to support authentication and premium features

  • Design conversational UIs that blend natural language and interactive components

The Apps SDK is open source, meaning apps built with it can run anywhere that adopts the MCP standard.

Developer Access & Next Steps

  • Developers can explore the SDK and start building in Developer Mode inside ChatGPT today.

  • OpenAI has released design guidelines, sample apps, and documentation to help devs get started quickly.

  • Later this year, OpenAI will open app submissions for review and listing in a dedicated App Directory, where users can browse and install apps.

  • Monetization options are also coming soon, with support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol — an open standard for instant, in-chat checkout.

Safety and Privacy

All ChatGPT apps must follow OpenAI’s usage and privacy policies. Apps must:

  • Be appropriate for all audiences

  • Provide a clear privacy policy

  • Collect only the minimum necessary data

  • Clearly communicate when user data is shared

More granular privacy controls are planned for later this year, allowing users to decide what data each app can access.

Coming Soon

OpenAI plans to expand apps to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu users later in 2025. Developers will soon be able to publish and monetize their apps directly in ChatGPT’s upcoming app marketplace.

As OpenAI puts it, “This is just the start of apps in ChatGPT — bringing new utility to users and new opportunities for developers.”
