Perplexity Introduces Personal Computer AI Agent
Perplexity Personal Computer

Perplexity has unveiled a new vision for AI computing in a blog post titled “Everything is Computer,” introducing a system called Personal Computer—an always-running AI agent designed to manage tasks, files, and workflows on behalf of users.

The announcement builds on the company’s earlier Perplexity Computer platform, which combines multiple AI models and tools into a unified system capable of executing complex tasks across applications.

According to Perplexity, the next generation of computing will revolve around AI agents that act as digital workers, performing tasks continuously rather than waiting for direct user commands.

A Computer That Works for You 24/7

At the center of the concept is Personal Computer, an AI agent that runs on a dedicated device—often a Mac mini—in a user’s local environment.

This system functions as the “home” for the AI, allowing it to stay connected to the user’s files, applications, and workflows at all times.

The agent is designed to:

  • Manage documents and files

  • Execute software tasks

  • Gather research and prepare reports

  • Coordinate workflows across apps

Because the AI runs continuously, users can assign tasks and let the system complete them autonomously—even when they are offline.

Combining Local Devices With Cloud Intelligence

Unlike purely cloud-based AI assistants, Perplexity’s Personal Computer uses a hybrid architecture.

The system runs locally on a dedicated machine but connects to Perplexity’s cloud services for advanced AI capabilities. This design allows the agent to access sensitive local files while still benefiting from powerful large language models and APIs.

Perplexity says the local component helps address privacy concerns while enabling deeper integration with the user’s computer environment.

AI Agents That Execute Multi-Step Workflows

The concept is built around agentic workflows, where AI systems break down complex goals into smaller tasks.

For example, a user might request a briefing for a business meeting. The AI agent could then:

  1. Search relevant information online

  2. Scan emails or CRM systems

  3. Analyze internal documents

  4. Create a summary presentation

The AI coordinates these steps automatically and delivers the final result to the user.

This approach shifts AI from a conversational tool into something closer to a project manager that executes tasks independently.

Built-In Safety Controls

Because the AI agent can access sensitive data and perform actions on behalf of users, Perplexity has included several control mechanisms:

  • Explicit approval for sensitive actions

  • A complete audit log of all AI activity

  • A manual “kill switch” allowing users to stop the system instantly

These safeguards are intended to ensure users maintain control over automated workflows.

Part of the Rise of Agentic Computing

The “Everything is Computer” concept reflects a growing trend in the AI industry: moving from simple chat interfaces toward autonomous AI agents that operate entire workflows.

Instead of manually interacting with software, users may increasingly rely on AI systems that coordinate tasks across multiple tools and services.

Perplexity’s approach positions the AI agent as the central interface to computing, capable of managing files, apps, and information in the background while users focus on goals rather than individual commands.
