October 30, 2025 – Perplexity has announced the launch of Perplexity Patents, a new AI-powered patent research tool designed to make intellectual property (IP) intelligence accessible to everyone. The company calls it the world’s first AI patent research agent, aiming to simplify what has traditionally been one of the most complex and exclusive areas of innovation.
Patent search has long been dominated by systems requiring precise keyword combinations, Boolean operators, and insider knowledge of specialized syntax. Public databases are often limited, and professional-grade platforms can cost thousands of dollars a year — keeping non-specialists largely locked out of the process.
Perplexity Patents looks to change that. The new tool allows users to search patents in natural language, asking questions like “Are there any patents on AI for language learning?” or “What are the key quantum computing patents since 2024?” The AI automatically interprets the question, retrieves relevant patents, and even provides an inline document viewer with direct citation links to the original filings.
Perplexity says the system keeps context across multiple questions, enabling conversational patent research where users can refine or compare results without starting over. Follow-up prompts and related topic suggestions help guide exploration and uncover new directions.
Perplexity Patents brings patent intelligence to the pace of real innovation,” the company said in its announcement. “You don’t have to master patent syntax or search tricks — just ask your question and get clear, contextual answers in seconds.
Under the hood, the product uses a state-of-the-art agentic research system built on an exabyte-scale search infrastructure and a dedicated patent knowledge index. The AI breaks down complex questions into retrieval tasks, executes them, and synthesizes results from dozens or even hundreds of relevant documents.
Unlike traditional databases, Perplexity Patents can also explore non-patent sources like academic papers, open-source repositories, and technical blogs — offering a broader view of prior art and emerging technologies.
The product launches today in public beta, available worldwide and free for all users. Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers will receive additional usage quotas and advanced configuration options.
To try it, users can simply type any patent-related question into Perplexity.ai, and the platform will surface the most relevant inventions and supporting documents in real time.
