Is Google Stealing our Intelligence?

Do you think we are getting dumber each day? I think so. Should we blame Microsoft and Google for it? Let’s debate about it. I would like to get your opinion about it.

I remember 10 years ago, writing a program or even a simple function was like solving a puzzle. I used to spend lot of time on paper and blackboard figuring out the solution and actually which solution is more feasible and optimized among many of them. After that I used to create flow charts and data-flow diagrams to understand the logic before I even think about putting in a code format.

Today, a regular programmer uses Google, types a question or a keyword, clicks few links, finds the code snippet, copy and paste it and bam. I’ve noticed many of us don’t even try to understand what the code snippet is doing. Is the code found the best solution for your problem? I asked few programmers what a psedo-code is, and they were looking at my face like I am speaking Hebrew.

Now in recent version of Visual Studio (2005), Microsoft has added code snippet feature, which allows programmers to simply type a keyword and code snippet is right there for you.

I understand finding reusable code gives us better productivity but what about our intelligence? What about our thought process? Should Google and Microsoft be held accountalbe for making us programmers less intelligent?
