I think that one of the earliest Version Control Systems was Source Code Control System (SCCS). It was initially developed in 1972 for the IBM System/370 computer. The Wikipedia says "SCCS was the dominant version control system for Unix until the release of the Revision Control System (RCS)" and I know the SCCS was included in Unix when I purchased a copy in about 1989. I think the SCCS had the feature of being a central repository for all the changes. The SCCS was the predecessor to the Revision Control System (RCS).
