SharePoint Server 2019 Library Settings Options In Modern Experience

On October 22, 2018 Microsoft officially released the RTM version of SharePoint Server 2019. One of the great improvements in SharePoint Server 2019 is Modern List/Library. There are many configuration options which as a user I want to use to configure and organize my data. With the change of the look and feel, it is a little tough to reach the Library Settings page in the modern experience. Today, I am going to help the users find the Library Settings option in Modern Library.

If you move from SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint 2016 Classic experience to SharePoint 2019 Modern experience, the user must be still using the classic version of List/Library and using the ribbon option on the library page. But in the modern experience, we don’t have ribbon any more so it is kind of confusing for them to find the Library Settings option.

There are a couple of ways in which we can go to the Library Settings page in modern list/libraries.

Option # 1

Please follow the steps below to get this.

  • Open the Document Library in the browser.

Another option is by using the Site Content option. Follow the below steps to reach the Library Settings.

  • Open the Site Collection in the browser.
  • Click on the Settings gear [On top-right side of the page] and click on "Site Content".

Option # 3

The third way is, simply, move back to the Classic experience and get the Library Settings page.

  • Open the document library in the browser.
  • On the bottom left, click on "Return to classic SharePoint" experience.

  • On this page, you can click on Library Settings via Ribbon.
Option # 4

You can also use the direct URL for the Library Settings page, you can do it using the _layouts /Listedit.aspx page.

  • In the below URL, you have to change the List GUID with your own List GUID https://krosssfarm.sharepoint.com / _layouts/15/ listedit.aspx ?List= %7B813d0ae7-6c0c-4823-acf9-6d79f587b628%7D
Troubleshooting

Sometimes, you notice that you are in the Modern experience but you are not seeing the gear option / Library Settings option on top right side of the library page. There are a couple of reasons why the Library Setting option is missing from the gear option.

  • Make sure the logged-in user has proper permission. If it has only read permission, then it can’t see those options.
  • If the user has proper permission but is still not able to see it

    • Try to clear the browser cache, close the browser and reopen it and test it.
    • In some cases, if you have Kerberos authentication enabled in your On-prem farm, then either clear the Kerberos tickets by running the “Klist purge” command in cmd line. Or you can reboot the machine.
    • Try in a different browser or even sometimes, try with a different machine.

This post applies to both, SharePoint Online as well as SharePoint Server 2019, with Modern experience enabled List and Libraries.

Hope this helped! Keep enjoying and exploring the SharePoint. Your feedback is always welcome.
