What Is Amazon  Bedrock  AgentCore

Introduction

As organizations race to adopt autonomous AI capabilities, they face significant challenges around security, governance, and operational scale. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore addresses these challenges by providing a comprehensive, enterprise‑grade platform to deploy, operate, and govern AI agents using any framework or model, whether hosted on Amazon Bedrock or elsewhere.

What is Amazon Bedrock AgentCore

AgentCore is a complete suite of services designed to streamline every phase of an AI agent’s lifecycle—from secure runtime execution to orchestration and monitoring—so enterprises can move from prototype to production with minimal friction. It offers:

Secure, Serverless Runtime: Session‑isolated execution with extended workload durations, ensuring reliable agent runs without manual infrastructure management.
Fine‑Grained Permissions & Context: Tools that grant agents exactly the permissions and data context they need to call enterprise APIs and systems securely.
Enterprise‑Grade Security & Governance: Built‑in controls and audit trails to maintain compliance with corporate policies and regulatory requirements.
Multi‑Agent Orchestration: Support for standardized communication protocols and agent‑to‑agent coordination under a supervisor agent.
Agent Lifecycle Management: End‑to‑end tooling for deploying, scaling, and updating agents in production.
Monitoring & Observability: Real‑time insights into agent behavior, performance metrics, and error tracking.
Marketplace Integration: Seamless access to third‑party agents and tools via the AWS AI Agents Marketplace.

Key Benefits and Use Cases

Rapid Productionization: Cut integration time from weeks to minutes by leveraging AgentCore’s serverless APIs and prebuilt orchestration features.
Scalability: Automatically scale agents based on demand without manual server or container provisioning.
Security & Compliance: Ensure strict isolation between agent sessions and enterprise data, with comprehensive audit logs for every API call.
Modular Workflows: Combine specialized agents—such as data retrieval, document analysis, and transaction processing—into coordinated workflows for complex tasks.
Ecosystem Acceleration: Leverage hundreds of prebuilt agents and guardrails from marketplace partners to accelerate deployment of industry‑specific solutions.

How does it work?

Define Your Agent: Select your foundation model and integrate any custom logic or functions, such as serverless hooks or database queries.
Configure Permissions: Use fine‑grained identity and access policies to grant scoped access to required systems.
Deploy via APIs: Submit your agent definition to AgentCore; AWS handles runtime isolation and provisioning.
Orchestrate Workflows: For multi‑agent setups, configure supervisor agents to decompose tasks and coordinate execution among specialized agents.
Monitor & Iterate: Use dashboards and logs to track performance and errors, then update your agent configurations without downtime.

What is AgentCore Runtime?

AgentCore Runtime is the secure, serverless execution environment for running AI‑agent workloads. Its main features are:

Sandboxed containers with true session isolation, preventing data leakage across users
Support for both low‑latency interactions and long‑running agents (up to 8 hours)
Fast cold starts so agents spin up instantly
Multi‑modal payload handling (text, images, structured data)
Integrated identity management for authentication and access control

You configure and launch your agent with just a few lines of code or CLI commands. Network modes let you choose from a restricted‑services sandbox, full internet access, or a VPC‑only option to meet your compliance needs.

Which agent frameworks does AgentCore support?

AgentCore is framework‑agnostic. Out of the box, it works with popular open‑source frameworks like:

CrewAI
LangGraph
Strands Agents
LlamaIndex

You can also plug in any custom or proprietary framework via standard protocols, allowing you to keep your existing orchestration logic while taking advantage of AgentCore’s managed runtime and tooling.

Which foundation models can I use with AgentCore?

AgentCore lets you use any foundation model, whether hosted in Bedrock or elsewhere. Through Bedrock, you have access to over 100 leading models, including those from Amazon (Titan), Anthropic (Claude), AI21 Labs (Jurassic‑2), Cohere, Meta (Llama 2), Mistral, Stability AI, and many more. You simply specify the model ID in your API calls—no additional adapters or glue code required.

How am I charged for using AgentCore?

Pricing is flexible and consumption‑based, with no upfront commitments. Each component is billed independently based on usage:

Runtime (compute and memory consumption)
Tools (browser automation and code interpreter compute)
Gateway (tool invocation requests)
Identity (token and vault operations)
Memory (short‑ and long‑term memory reads/writes)
Observability (metrics and telemetry ingestion)

AgentCore services are free to try through the preview period. Once you’re in production, you’ll pay only for what you use, plus any associated AWS service charges (for example, for logging or monitoring).
