What Is Net Neutrality?

Earlier this week, the FCC chairman Ajit Pai submitted a proposal to kill net neutrality. What does that mean? And how will it impact you and the Internet? How will it impact developers?

According to Wikipedia

Net neutrality is the principle that states that the Internet Service Providers and governments regulating most of the Internet must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication. For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.

How does it impact you?

Being the owner of an iPhone, I remember Apple used Yahoo as its search engine iOS operating system. Clearly, there is no way for me to change that. What if you want to use Google as your search engine?

Killing net neutrality gives power to ISPs and cable providers to control the speed of data, service providers, and even slow down or block some content that may not be blocked otherwise.

What if you’re watching Channel 9, YouTube, or other videos? Without net neutrality, your ISP has a control over the speed of streaming videos.

I doubt that consumers want to eliminate Net Neutrality; it is probably just the big companies that want it. Without Net Neutrality the big companies can ensure that the little companies with a better deal cannot succeed. Net Neutrality benefits consumers and small companies.

This article is the need of hour sir. Thanks for sharing. I strongly believe that open internet has a huge role in shaping our world as we see it today. If someone can control what people see and do on internet then they can control the world. They can make and break things. Most of the people are not aware about this thing. we should spread the word and urge our government also to take a step to ensure control free internet. As a user we should decide what we use on internet not the ISPs.
