Basic example of encapsulation in C# ?

Encapsulation is nothing but the methodology to achieve Abstraction.

Abstraction says to show only what is necessary, This is just a theory.

And Encapsulation says to hide the complexity, which indirectly means to show only the necessary.

Meaning with encapsulation we actually achieve Abstraction.

Where Abstraction is just a theory and Encapsulation is real implementation to achieve abstraction.

Now, Whatever you do to hide the complexity will come under Encapsulation. The first thing that should come to your mind is Access-specifiers.

For example, the UI layer is meant for UI only, with NO Business validation and no Data Access code.

So, if you do validation or DB query in the UI layer (Controller or Code-behind) then it is against the abstraction as you are showing the Caller (UI) unnecessary properties or methods that he has nothing to do with.

public class Product
{
public string Name {get;set;}
public int price {get;set;}
}

Now in the UI layer if you do

public void AddProduct(Product p)
{
ProductBL obj= new ProductBL(); // BL object for product
if (p.price>0)
{
obj.Insert(p);
}
}

Then this is against abstraction. To achieve abstraction here whatever you can do will all come under encapsulation

public class Product
{
public string Name {get;set;}
private int _price;
public int price {get
{
return _price;
}
set
{
if(_price>0)
{
_price=value;
}else
{
throw new Exception ("Quantity Can't be zero")
}
}
}
}

Now UI is not complex, he knows nothing about business validation like whether 0 should be accepted as quantity or not. He will just pass the data to the BLL class method without worrying about anything.

public void AddProduct(Product p)
{
ProductBL obj= new ProductBL(); // BL object for product
try{
obj.Insert(p);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
// handle exception here
}
}
