  Please check below code for example. I think you are missing some thing,

  1. SqlConnection con;  
  2.             SqlDataAdapter adapter ;  
  3.             DataSet ds = new DataSet();  
  4.             try {  
  5.                 //create connection object and write connection
  6.                 con = new SqlConnection("connetionString");  
  7.                 // Write your SQL statement  
  8.                 String query="SELECT * FROM YourTableName;  
  9.                 con.Open();

  11.                 adapter = new SqlDataAdapter(query, con);  
  12.                 //fill the dataset using fill method 
  13.                 adapter.Fill(ds);

  look at this:

  Between connection.Open(); and command.ExecuteNonQuery(); I just added two lines like this:

  1. connection.Open();    
  2.     
  3. MySqlCommand cmd = new MySqlCommand("set net_write_timeout=99999; set net_read_timeout=99999", connection); // Setting tiimeout on mysqlServer    
  4. cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();    
  5.     
  6. int numOfRecordsUpdated = command.ExecuteNonQuery();

  I am using here SqlAdapter and used  cmd.SelectCommand.CommandTimeout = 99999;

  The workaround then was to customize the net_xxx_timeout settings. For example, issue the following after openning your connection and before executing the datareader: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/17981953/fatal-error-encounterd-when-using-mysqldatareader https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=61807
