Microsoft has more products, Kinect, Xbox etc. Question might arise why did they use Kinect and not Connect and why did they named their gaming console as Xbox and not as GamingBox or MSGames. It is just the way they like things to be.
Actually, it is well said that they found it easy to be the parent for other inheriting products. Such as ASP.NET, VB.NET etc. Which would make sense, as to be running over the .NET framework.

I suspect that MS added the dot so that it could be easily used as a suffix for related products: ASP.NET, Visual Basic.NET etc.
