DBA, is a "specialist" mostly (only) focused on database concepts. But as a software engineer you should focus on particular technology (like ASP.Net , C#, JS etc). However, you should know about the basic knowledge of DB. Not much as DBA. AFAIK, That is the only different. Back to your question: Both are equal in terms of career growth. On which technology you passion about, follow it.
