As an Engineering Manager - Backend at PhonePe, you will lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team to drive the development and maintenance of scalable backend systems. Your leadership will be crucial in defining engineering plans, driving best practices, and ensuring the health of production systems. You will also play a key role in stakeholder management and team development.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Decision-Making. Facilitate discussions and lead decision-making on all engineering aspects of your team.
- Engineering Plans. Define and execute engineering strategies for your area of responsibility.
- Best Practices. Drive and implement engineering best practices and maintain system hygiene.
- Business Impact. Oversee the health of the business components managed by your team.
- Feedback Integration. Challenge business and product teams on outcomes, channel feedback into execution, and ensure accountability for engineering outputs.
- Team Management. Hire, mentor, and retain a top-tier engineering team.
- Stakeholder Management. Manage relationships with business, product, operations, and external clients/vendors.
Required Qualifications
- Education. BTech, MTech, or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field (or equivalent).
- Experience. 11+ years of software development experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role.
- Technical Skills. Proven ability to design and develop complex solutions, including large-scale distributed systems.
- Leadership. Experience building and managing high-performing software development teams.
- Communication. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
- Startup Experience. Experience in startups or fast-paced environments is a plus.
