
Google has introduced Sheets canvas, a new Gemini-powered feature that turns traditional Google Sheets data into interactive, visual mini-apps. The feature lets users describe what they want in natural language and have Gemini build a custom interface on top of their existing spreadsheet data.
Rather than replacing the underlying spreadsheet, Sheets canvas adds a dynamic, read-write layer over it. Changes made in the canvas and the original spreadsheet remain synchronized, allowing users to continue working with familiar spreadsheet data while interacting with it through a more visual interface.
Google is initially making Sheets canvas available globally in English to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The feature is also beginning to roll out to Google Workspace customers on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus plans, as well as Google AI Pro for Education add-on subscribers.
What Is Sheets Canvas?
Sheets canvas is essentially a visual application layer for a spreadsheet.
Users can start with an existing Google Sheet and ask Gemini to transform the information into a specific experience. For example, a spreadsheet containing assignment deadlines could become an interactive study tracker, while a list of event attendees could be converted into a seating-planning interface.
The feature does not require users to write formulas, scripts or application code. Instead, they describe the desired result in natural language and Gemini generates the layout and functionality.
Users can then continue prompting Gemini to modify the canvas, including changes to its layout, design and functionality.
The Spreadsheet Remains the Source of Data
One of the more important technical aspects of Sheets canvas is that it does not create an isolated copy of the information.
Google describes the canvas as a dynamic, read-write layer that sits directly on top of the spreadsheet. When information changes in the original Sheet, the canvas reflects those changes, and edits made through the canvas can update the underlying spreadsheet.
That distinction could make the feature more useful for teams that already rely on Sheets as a shared data source.
Instead of exporting spreadsheet data into a separate dashboard or building a lightweight application from scratch, users can create an interactive interface while keeping the original spreadsheet workflow intact.
From Rows and Columns to Interactive Tools
Google is highlighting several examples of how the feature can be used.
Study and Assignment Trackers
Students can turn lists of assignments into interactive study tools. A canvas can organize subjects and deadlines, display progress and provide a more visual way to understand upcoming work.
Fantasy Sports Dashboards
A spreadsheet containing player statistics can be transformed into a custom dashboard for comparing performance, tracking a roster and visualizing relevant statistics.
Event and Wedding Planning
Google also demonstrates using Sheets canvas to transform RSVP information into an interactive seating chart. Users can move guests between tables while keeping the underlying guest data synchronized with the original spreadsheet.
These examples illustrate Google’s broader goal: allowing Sheets to function as both a data-management tool and a lightweight interface-building environment.
No-Code Application Creation
The most significant implication for developers and business users may be the reduction in technical requirements.
Creating an interactive dashboard or internal tool traditionally requires some combination of spreadsheet formulas, scripts, database connections, front-end development or specialized business-intelligence software.
Sheets canvas attempts to compress that process into a natural-language workflow.
A user can describe the desired application, review the generated result and continue refining it through conversational prompts. Google says no coding or formulas are required.
This positions Sheets canvas somewhere between a spreadsheet, dashboard builder and lightweight application generator.
Gemini Becomes the Interface Builder
Sheets canvas also extends Google’s broader strategy of embedding Gemini directly into productivity applications.
Earlier in 2026, Google expanded Gemini’s capabilities in Sheets to create, organize and edit entire spreadsheets from natural-language instructions. Google also introduced tools for automatically filling tables with generated, categorized or web-sourced information.
Sheets canvas builds on that foundation but changes the focus from manipulating spreadsheet cells to generating a visual experience around the data.
That distinction is important. Gemini is no longer being used only to help write formulas or analyze a table; it is being used to determine how users should interact with the information.
Collaboration Is Built In
Because Sheets canvas exists within Google Sheets, Google says it can be shared with other people in the same way as a regular spreadsheet.
That means teams can collaborate on the underlying data and the visual canvas without introducing a separate application or collaboration system.
For organizations already using Google Workspace, this could make lightweight internal dashboards easier to distribute.

Sheets canvas is available globally in English for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

It is also rolling out to customers with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.
Google says users can access the feature by opening a Google Sheets spreadsheet, opening the Ask Gemini side panel and selecting Create canvas.
The announcement does not specify a separate price for Sheets canvas. Access is tied to the supported Google AI and Workspace plans.
