Google Gemini adds AI image editing for all users

Google’s Gemini chatbot is stepping up its game. The company has announced that users can now edit both AI-generated images and their own photos directly within the Gemini app. This new feature brings powerful, multi-step image editing tools right into the chatbot experience, expanding the scope of what users can do with Gemini.

Native Image Editing Rolling Out Globally

Google began rolling out native image editing in Gemini on Wednesday and plans to expand it to users in over 45 languages and most countries in the coming weeks.

This release builds on a version previously tested in Google’s AI Studio back in March, which went viral for its controversial watermark removal feature.

What You Can Do with Gemini’s New Image Editing Tools?

With this update, Gemini offers a “multi-step” image editing flow—a more advanced and contextual interaction that allows users to refine prompts using both text and visuals.

Key Features

  • Upload your own photos or use AI-generated ones
  • Change the backgrounds of images
  • Replace or add objects and elements
  • Generate visuals for stories, ideas, or concepts
  • Try personal edits like seeing yourself with different hairstyles or outfits

AI-Powered and Risk-Aware

To address concerns about misuse, especially around deepfakes, Google says all images created or edited through Gemini will include invisible watermarks. The company is also experimenting with visible watermarks to further boost transparency.

Why It Matters?

This update puts Gemini in closer competition with tools like ChatGPT’s image editor and other standalone AI art generators. It offers both convenience and creativity within one seamless app, further bridging the gap between chatbots and full-scale AI design platforms.
