MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — January 2026 — Google is introducing a new control in Google Meet that allows meeting hosts to automatically enable its AI-powered “Take notes for me” feature whenever they host a meeting.
The update is designed to reduce friction for users who regularly rely on AI-generated meeting notes. Previously, hosts had to manually enable note-taking when scheduling a meeting, or turn it on during the call. With the new toggle, hosts can choose to have AI note-taking start automatically for all meetings they host.
The setting is turned off by default, and users can enable or disable it at any time through their Google Meet settings. Google said there are no changes to in-meeting controls, meaning hosts and select participants can still turn note-taking off during a meeting whenever needed.
More Control, Less Setup
The new toggle gives users persistent control over AI note-taking preferences, removing the need to remember to activate the feature for each meeting. Once enabled, “Take notes for me” will automatically start whenever the user hosts a meeting, streamlining meeting setup and documentation.
Google emphasized that the change does not alter participation controls or permissions. Users retain full control over when notes are captured and can stop the experience at any point during a call.
Admin and User Settings
Admins can enable or disable AI note-taking for their organizations through admin settings.
End users will see the new toggle disabled by default and can manage it directly within Google Meet settings.
Rollout Timeline
Rapid Release domains: Gradual rollout beginning January 8, 2026, with up to 15 days for full visibility.
Scheduled Release domains: Full rollout beginning January 22, 2026, typically completing within 1–3 days.

The automatic AI note-taking toggle will be available for eligible Google Workspace customers, including:
Business Standard and Business Plus
Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus
Google AI Pro for Education
Frontline Plus
The update reflects Google’s broader push to embed AI more deeply into everyday collaboration tools, aiming to make meetings easier to manage while keeping user control and transparency front and center.
