Meta Launches User-Driven Community Notes Program

Meta Community Notes

Meta is now accepting sign-ups for its new Community Notes program on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This comes after the company ended its third-party fact-checking program and switched to a model where users help flag and add context to misleading posts.

How to Join the Community Notes Program?

People in the U.S. who are over 18, have an active account for at least six months, and have a verified phone number or two-factor authentication can now sign up to become contributors to the Community Notes program.

How Community Notes Work?

Once signed up, users can write and submit notes to posts they believe are misleading. These notes can provide extra context or information, with a 500-character limit and a required link. Notes will only be added if enough users find them helpful.

Meta’s Approach to Content Moderation

Meta says that Community Notes will be created and rated by users, not the company itself, and must follow Meta's community standards. The company is focusing on transparency and free speech with this move, moving away from fact-checking to allow more user-driven moderation.
