OpenAI today announced its acquisition of Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, a natural language interface for macOS designed to make AI more deeply integrated into users’ everyday workflows.
The acquisition strengthens OpenAI’s vision for ChatGPT as a hands-on assistant that not only responds to user prompts but also takes meaningful action across applications — blending intelligence, interface, and context to help users get things done.
We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts, it helps you get things done. Sky’s deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day.” — Nick Turley, VP & Head of ChatGPT
Sky: A Natural Language Interface for the Mac
Sky is known for its macOS-level integration that allows AI to understand on-screen context and act within users’ apps. Whether drafting documents, coding, managing schedules, or handling creative projects, Sky enables AI to assist users directly within the native Mac environment.
The software combines natural language understanding with system-level awareness, allowing users to issue conversational commands like:
“Summarize this document and email it to my team.”
“Organize my open windows by project.”
“Check my code editor for syntax issues and open the relevant file.”
By embedding AI functionality into the desktop interface itself, Sky provides a frictionless way for users to interact with intelligent systems without leaving their workspace.
Bringing Sky’s Capabilities into ChatGPT
OpenAI confirmed that the entire Software Applications Inc. team will join OpenAI, and that Sky’s technology will be integrated directly into ChatGPT products — beginning with macOS experiences.
This move signals a clear step toward ChatGPT as an operating assistant, capable of understanding on-screen context, automating workflows, and acting as a bridge between AI reasoning and native desktop functionality.
We’ve always wanted computers to be more empowering, customizable, and intuitive,” said Ari Weinstein, Co-Founder and CEO of Software Applications Inc. With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together. That’s why we built Sky—an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create. We’re thrilled to join OpenAI to bring that vision to hundreds of millions of people.
Enhancing Human–Computer Collaboration
The acquisition reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy of embedding AI directly into the computing experience, moving beyond chat-based interactions toward context-aware, action-oriented assistants.
Sky’s integration could bring ChatGPT closer to functioning as a native AI companion across platforms, capable of performing tasks through direct understanding of windows, documents, and on-screen actions — a major evolution from web-only interfaces.
What’s Next
OpenAI says it will share more about Sky’s integration timeline and expanded desktop features in the coming months. The company is expected to bring similar contextual capabilities to ChatGPT Atlas for macOS, and later to Windows and mobile platforms.
For now, users can expect ChatGPT’s desktop experience to become smarter, faster, and more deeply connected to the operating systems and apps they rely on daily.
