September 29, 2025 – OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, marking its first step into AI-powered commerce. The feature, built with Stripe and powered by the new Agentic Commerce Protocol, allows users to complete purchases directly within a chat.
Instant Checkout: Shopping Inside ChatGPT
Starting today, U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users can purchase products directly from U.S.-based Etsy sellers without leaving the app. Support for over one million Shopify merchants, including major brands such as Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori, will follow soon.
Currently, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases, with multi-item carts, more merchants, and international expansion planned next.
For users, the flow is simple:
Ask a shopping-related question in ChatGPT.
Browse relevant, unsponsored product results.
Tap Buy, confirm order details, and complete payment within the chat.
Merchants handle fulfillment, payments, and support through their existing systems, while ChatGPT acts as a secure AI agent facilitating the transaction.
The Agentic Commerce Protocol
At the core of this update is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe. ACP allows AI agents, people, and businesses to coordinate purchases seamlessly.
Key features include:
Works across platforms, payment processors, and business types.
Quick integration without backend overhauls.
Merchants retain full ownership of the customer relationship—including fulfillment, returns, and support.
Stripe merchants can enable agentic payments with one line of code. Others can integrate via Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or the Delegated Payments Spec.
OpenAI has open-sourced ACP, inviting merchants and developers to begin building integrations immediately.

Explicit user confirmation at every step.
Encrypted payment tokens restricted to specific amounts and merchants.
Minimal data sharing, with only necessary details passed to merchants.
