Perplexity today announced the worldwide release of its highly anticipated Comet browser, now available for free at perplexity.ai/comet. First introduced in limited release on July 9, Comet quickly became one of the most sought-after AI products of the year, with millions joining the waitlist—outpacing invite availability.

Since its early rollout, Comet users have explored groundbreaking ways to work with the browser’s built-in AI assistant, with adoption and engagement far exceeding expectations. The company reports that new users ask 6–18 times more questions within their first day on Comet, unlocking curiosity and productivity.

A New Internet Experience

Perplexity positions Comet as a browser built for curiosity, not clicks. Unlike traditional browsers designed around ads and purchase funnels, Comet aims to return the internet to a place of exploration, learning, and discovery. "The internet is better on Comet," the company states.

Your AI, Everywhere You Work

At the core of Comet is the Comet Assistant, an AI that browses alongside users, answering questions, handling tasks, and streamlining workflows. Each new tab launches a fresh assistant, ready to act instantly.

In addition to the browser experience, Perplexity has expanded Comet Assistant beyond the chat paradigm. The recently announced Email Assistant integrates directly with inboxes, drafting replies, scheduling, and completing tasks automatically. Today, the company also unveiled Background Assistants, a new platform that enables multiple AI agents to work asynchronously, helping users manage ongoing tasks in parallel.

Mobile and Voice Coming Soon

Currently desktop-only, Comet is preparing to launch on mobile with features tailored for on-the-go use. The upcoming Comet mobile app will combine voice-first AI technology with an ad-free browsing experience, positioning itself as a powerful curiosity tool for smartphones.

Championing Better Content

Alongside the technology, Perplexity announced Comet Plus, a new program to support quality journalism. Several top-tier publishers have already joined as inaugural partners, ensuring users have access to credible, high-value content directly within the browser.
