WhatsApp Rolls Out New Anti-Scam Features

WhatsApp New Anti-Scam Features

In its ongoing efforts to curb scam-related activity, WhatsApp is rolling out new safety features focused on enhancing user protection against evolving scam tactics in group and individual messaging.

Smarter Group Join Alerts

One of the new features includes a safety overview prompt when you’re added to a WhatsApp group by someone not in your contact list. This prompt will display key information about the group to help users assess whether they recognize it. If not, users can exit immediately without needing to open the group chat, and group notifications will be silenced unless the user explicitly chooses to stay.

Context-Aware Messaging Warnings

Scammers often initiate contact on social media or job platforms, then move the conversation to private messaging platforms like WhatsApp. To disrupt this pattern, WhatsApp is testing new ways to help users pause and think before engaging in chats with unknown numbers. This may come in the form of additional context or warnings when a user starts messaging someone not in their contacts.

Three-Step Tip to Avoid Scams: Pause, Question, Verify

To help users defend against manipulation or urgency-based scams, WhatsApp is sharing a simple yet powerful framework:

  • PAUSE: Don’t rush to respond. Consider whether the contact or message seems legitimate.

  • QUESTION: Does the message sound too good to be true? Are they asking you for money, gift cards, or personal details?

  • VERIFY: Confirm their identity by reaching out through another trusted method (e.g., voice call or messaging through another platform).

WhatsApp’s efforts reflect the broader industry trend of leveraging user-facing safety tools and behavioral signals to reduce the risk of fraud, especially on platforms where privacy and encryption limit backend intrusion.
