Add RequiredFieldValidator to a drop down list

Hi,

How do you add a required field validator for a drop down list. My initial value is an empty string (" "). How to validate so that there should be a value selected.

function pageLoad() {
function Requiredfield(select, index) {
//To get Id Of dropdown
var currentId = $(select).attr('id');
//to get current Index
var currentSelIndex = document.getElementById(currentId).selectedIndex;
if(currentSelIndex ===0)
{
alert('Please Select the value');
}
}
}
and call it like this
var select1 = select = document.getElementById('ddl1');

select1.onchange = function () {
Requiredfield.call(this, select1, this.selectedIndex);
};
