Hello Samia,
In ASP.NET Core (using Entity Framework Core), you can create a foreign key relationship between two models by defining the relationship in your entity classes and configuring it in the
DbContext. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to declare a foreign key in your model.Example Scenario:
Let's say you have two models:
Order (Parent Model)
OrderItem (Child Model)
Each OrderItem belongs to an Order, so there is a one-to-many relationship between Order and OrderItem.
Step 1: Define the Models
Order Model (Parent)
OrderItem Model (Child)
Step 2: Configure the Foreign Key in the DbContext
In your DbContext class (e.g., ApplicationDbContext), you can configure the relationship using the Fluent API in the OnModelCreating method.
Step 3: Migrate the Changes to the Database
After defining the models and configuring the relationship, you need to create and apply a migration to update the database schema.
Open the Package Manager Console (in Visual Studio).
Run the following commands:
This will create the Orders and OrderItems tables in your database with the appropriate foreign key relationship.
Step 4: Use the Models in Your Application
You can now use the models in your application. For example, to add an Order with OrderItems:
Key Points:
Foreign Key Property: In the OrderItem model, the OrderId property is the foreign key.
Navigation Properties: The Order model has a collection of OrderItems, and the OrderItem model has a reference to its Order.
Fluent API Configuration: The OnModelCreating method in the DbContext is used to configure the relationship explicitly.
