i think i sussed it out - the file had4 lines each with 3 elelments as need, but the last there was a carage return on the last line making an empty 5th line - there for the split put no data into the array and therefor data[2] was out of bounds.

Use a try/catch for the ReadLine(). Give an error messge if there is an error. Then after the Split, first check to ensure there are 3 items, or that there is at least three items.

My guess is that the file is being used elsewhere in the program, or by anohter program. That could affect the snippet in a way that can't be seen by staring at the snippet. It could be seen by checking for errors.

And two hours later (no edits) the problem is back. Right my programe is ruined cos there is no explanagion for this and no way to fix it.

The file defo has 3 elements on each line - and when I went back and re ran it 2 hours later - no problems.
Now that is a real gremlin - it should not have happened - then it went away. Humm, great.

Perhaps there are only two items in a particular line in the file but your code is assuming there's three.
