How clr understands different languages ?

Hi all friends here..

I have 1.5 years of web development experiences in .net and been learning .net internals, it is being much more difficult to understand about the magic of how clr understands different languages?..

if u friend know how does the clr do magics?.. thanks in advance for u all friends..

Suppose you have written a C# program and save it in a file which is known as the Source Code.

Language specific compiler compiles the source code into the MSIL(Microsoft Intermediate Language) which is also know as the CIL(Common Intermediate Language) or IL(Intermediate Language) along with its metadata. Metadata includes the all the types, actual implementation of each function of the program. MSIL is machine independent code.

Now CLR comes into existence. CLR provides the services and runtime environment to the MSIL code. Internally CLR includes the JIT(Just-In-Time) compiler which converts the MSIL code to machine code which further executed by CPU. CLR also uses the .NET Framework class libraries. Metadata provides information about the programming language, environment, version, and class libraries to the CLR by which CLR handles the MSIL code. As CLR is common so it allows an instance of a class that written in a different language to call a method of the class which written in another language.

It's not CLR that understands all languages.
Actually compiler of all languages converts this to MSIL which every langauge can understand

Not Different Language Once your Code gets compiled using CLR ,the code is not converted to CPU instructions First what ever language example c++,C#,VB.Net if you compile using CLR first it's partially compiled that is MSIL(Intermediate Language) ,after that when the application starts an action your MSIL is further Compiled to Machine Instructions JIT is responsible for that action.

Let me try to explain in simplest possible terms:

Strictly technically CLR doesn't understand any language such as C# or VB. All it understand is stuff like MSIL, CTS, etc.

It is the compiler of the of the language which does the initial parsing of your code and makes MSIL out of it. So even if you are seeing .exe extension of the file, it is not the true .exe. It is still a .obj file from older days such as COBOL, etc.

It is CLR which translates this MSIL code to binary code which computer really understands and the executes it.

You may also wish to read a book "CLR via C#" for better understanding of whole process.

CLR is the heart of the. Net framework. Microsoft tries to bring the all the language under one umbrella that's why they introduce the MSIL(Microsoft Intermediate Language) and CTS(Common Type System). CTS is mainly used to interact with the CLR .
