How do I make a Custom Control w/o a User Interface?

Yes! I think a component is what I need, since I looked at the declarations of the dialog controls and Timer, and they all inherit from Component.

I don't really know where to start with a toolbox-enabled component though. Do you know of any samples?

Are you sure that you want a custom control because it sounds like what you actually want is a component. A component will appear in the toolbox and can be dragged onto a form just like a control but will just appear at the bottom of the designer screen not on the rendered UI.
