The link posted by Vasanth Natarajan is very good but the problem with MODI is lack of support for various image file formats. It mainly works with common images like PNG, BMP and limited number of TIFF sub-types.
If you need more advanced functions and you need to extract text from a wide set of file formats, take a look at this demo which uses LEADTOOLS library.
