How two different solutions can communicate.

It can be of any solution, we can get the required methods or functions only by adding it's dll or reference in the required project or solution.

If it is a separate solution, you will need to take a dll from it and then add reference and use it.

Having said that, i am not sure if you are expecting a more of architecture level answer and not the technical one.

If yes, there are several ways and one which is gaining wide popularity, and rightly so, is service oriented architecture (SOA). In particular, implementation of WebAPI. Here you are using dll only but the one hosted on the Internet.
