For 500 errors, one good way is to turn diagnostics on and to look at the logs - both the application event logs and the failed request logs might help. Here's one post about this - http://oakleafblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/adding-trace-event-counter-and-error.html

500 Internal Server Error server error response code indicates that the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request. It usually appears due to cache and cookies. You can try to delete the cache and give a try again. You can also have a look at the probable reasons:
