Correct. I have used the script tag. The reason for that you may place the drop down list in panel or some other parent control then sometimes it will be ctl100_panel_ddlParameter.
When you say <%= ddlParameter.ClientID%>, it will get the generated the client id which displays one in browser.

If it is selected other than default value then it will not throw error other wise it will show the error.
