You can differentiate Asp.net application and Asp.net website in following aspects. 1. your project file structure and their placement. 2. Project files compilation. 3. Source code files maintenance. 4. Language choice 1. In Asp.net application, source code files can be placed anywhere in project which will be complied to single .dll after the compilation. But in Asp.net Website all source code files will be placed under app_code folder. 2. In Asp.net application, pre compiled files are hosted on server. In Asp.net website no precompilation is done but the actual source code file are hosted on the web server. 3. No changes could be done after the application has been hosted as precompiled files except html and javascript files in Asp.net application.But this is possible in asp.net website as they are actual source code files. Only one managed language can be used with asp.net application project but you can choose to use multiple managed languages (VB and C#) in same project.
