Why can't I do Stream s = new Stream();

So how would I go and use a stream ? Like i have Stream s; StreamReader sr; ... eventually i'll have to do StreamReader(s); but i'll have to instanciated somehow right? I also need to use NetworkStream to send and receive data into a stream ... if i could used BufferedStream bs; it would be something like this NetworkStream netStream = new NetworkStream(s); s = new BufferedStream(netStream); sr = new StreamReader(sv); but I absolutely need to use Stream .. therefore i can't use BufferedStream

Stream is an abstract class. You can't instantiate abstract classes.
