Job Description

Programmers.io is urgently seeking an experienced COBOL Programmer with expertise in OpenVMS and DCL to join our team. This is a client-facing role, where you will collaborate closely with our development team to deliver high-quality integrations and solutions. Experience. 5-17 years

Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaborative Development. Work closely with developers, business analysts, and project managers to design and develop robust mainframe applications.
  2. Code Excellence. Write efficient, maintainable, and well-documented code using COBOL, CICS, DB2, and other mainframe technologies.
  3. Integration. Design and develop seamless integrations using SOAP/XML, REST/JSON APIs, and various communication protocols (AS2, SFTP, HTTP).
  4. Testing & Quality Assurance. Develop and execute unit and integration tests to ensure code meets functional requirements and quality standards. Collaborate with QA teams and UAT users.
  5. Troubleshooting & Support. Provide production support, troubleshoot issues, and perform root cause analysis. Revise, update, and refactor code as needed.
  6. Documentation. Create comprehensive documentation for applications, including developer, support, operations, and business-level documents.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a COBOL Programmer.
  • Advanced knowledge of the OpenVMS platform.
  • Strong experience with Oracle RDB databases and query writing.
  • Familiarity with SOAP/XML, REST/JSON APIs, and communication protocols such as AS2, SFTP, HTTP.
  • Proficient in using mainframe development tools such as IBM Debug Tool, File-AID.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teams and work independently.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience in the freight forwarding industry.
  • Familiarity with ANSI X12 transaction sets (e.g., 204, 211, 210, 310, 850, 856, 997).
  • Experience with EDI translation software.
  • Direct interaction experience with customers and vendors.
