As a Network Operations Engineer at IBM, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing our network infrastructure. You will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving complex networking issues, creating detailed technical documentation, and ensuring the smooth operation of our global network services. This role requires hands-on experience with networking concepts and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Incident Management. Document and manage network incidents and problems according to IBM Cloud IaaS Network Services standards.
- Technical Troubleshooting. Act as a technical expert to diagnose and resolve networking issues involving switches and routers from vendors like Cisco, Arista, and Juniper.
- Networking Protocols. Work with Layer-2 (e.g., Port-channel, switching concepts) and Layer-3 technologies (e.g., BGP, MPLS, VRF).
- Monitoring. Actively monitor network performance using tools and dashboards to identify and address issues.
- Documentation. Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for network operations and support.
- Decision-Making. Make informed decisions based on best practices, risk assessment, and business needs. Clearly communicate decision points.
- Collaboration. Coordinate with external teams, vendors, and providers to resolve network issues and improve performance.
- Automation. Engage in basic network automation tasks to streamline processes.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience. 4-6 years of experience in large-scale service provider networks with at least 2 years in routing and switching.
- Networking Expertise. Hands-on experience with Layer-2 and Layer-3 networking concepts.
- Technical Documentation. Proven ability to create detailed technical documentation for network support.
- Communication. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Shift Work. Willingness to work in a shift environment and adhere to shift timings.
- Server Experience. Experience with both Windows and Unix (Linux/FreeBSD) servers.
- Global Network Exposure. Experience with global network design and management.
- Education. Degree in Information Systems or Computer Science; Bachelor’s preferred.
- Automation. Basic knowledge of network automation.
Preferred Skills
- Multi-Vendor Experience. Experience with Cisco, Juniper, and Arista network equipment.
- ITIL Knowledge. Familiarity with ITIL processes.
- Networking Certification. Valid certification from any networking vendor.
- VPC Knowledge. Familiarity with Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and overlay terminologies.
- Python Skills. Basic knowledge of Python for scripting and automation tasks.
