The Direct Machine Learning (DirectML) Team at Microsoft is driving the next wave of innovations in AI and machine learning, making it a cornerstone of the Windows ecosystem. As a Senior Software Engineer on our team, you'll be at the heart of this technological transformation, developing advanced solutions that power the Windows Copilot Runtime and other cutting-edge ML applications.
In this role, you will work on optimizing performance and scalability across diverse hardware architectures GPU, CPU, and NPU contributing to breakthroughs in machine learning technologies. Your efforts will help shape the future of AI-driven applications and support a range of critical workloads, from computer vision to audio and video processing.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Excellence. Design, develop, and optimize high-performance execution engines and tools for machine learning. Set the bar for engineering quality and ensure the reliability of all software components.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration. Work closely with internal teams and industry partners to drive co-engineering efforts. Collaborate with hardware vendors and customer teams to enhance the DirectML platform and ensure it meets evolving needs.
- Performance Benchmarking. Develop and maintain robust performance benchmark systems to evaluate and improve the efficiency of machine learning operations across different frameworks and hardware.
- System Compatibility. Extend and maintain the system compatibility test suite to ensure consistent, accurate results across diverse hardware and software environments.
- Automated Monitoring. Oversee daily builds and maintain the automated monitoring system to ensure stable and reliable platform performance.
- Open-Source Engagement. Engage with the open-source community to advance platform missions and integrate relevant community contributions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- 4+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, with a strong focus on debugging and coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- 4+ years of experience in delivering high-quality systems software.
- 3+ years of experience working with low-level software stacks and integrating hardware with software.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in developing machine learning compilers or compute kernels is highly preferred.
- Hands-on experience with training or fine-tuning language models.
- Knowledge of GPU, NPU, or CPU compute architectures and experience with high-performance compute kernels.
- Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to navigate ambiguity and prioritize development tasks effectively.

Compensation
- Base Pay Range. CAD $108,100 - CAD $199,700 per year.
