Application Window Now Open: Key Dates and Grant Details

Nonprofits can now apply for the first round of unrestricted grants, with the application portal open from September 8 to October 8, 2025. All grants will be distributed by year’s end, giving organizations flexibility to utilize the funding where it's most impactful. Importantly, prior experience with AI tools is not a requirement—OpenAI welcomes both established and emerging nonprofits at every stage of AI adoption.

Grant Focus: From AI Literacy to Economic Opportunity

The People-First AI Fund is structured to support a diverse array of initiatives, focusing on three transformative areas:

• AI Literacy & Public Understanding: Grants will back programs that boost communities’ knowledge and confidence with artificial intelligence, including innovative education projects, media initiatives, and skill-building for local leaders—enabling more people to engage meaningfully with AI technologies.

• Community Innovation: OpenAI is prioritizing community-led solutions where residents—especially youth, educators, and trusted local figures—shape how AI is integrated to strengthen civic life, expand essential services, and improve health and wellness outcomes.

• Economic Opportunity: The fund champions efforts that widen access to meaningful work through AI, supporting tools and training that prepare people for future jobs, empower small businesses, and develop community-driven economic models that underscore fairness and inclusion.

Special priority will be given to organizations directly serving underrepresented communities—such as older adults, rural residents, and linguistically isolated groups—to ensure that AI's benefits are equitably distributed.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, organizations must:

• Be U.S.-based public charities with valid 501(c)(3) status.

• Operate primarily within the 50 U.S. states or the District of Columbia.

• Have an annual operating budget between $500,000 and $10 million.

• Submit only one application (while including multiple collaborators, if needed).

• Avoid use of funds for regranting or for fiscally sponsored projects.

Notably, nonprofits do not need to have existing AI projects to participate—the fund is open to all stages, from initial exploration to active deployment.

How to Apply

Eligible organizations interested in advancing AI for social good can submit applications via the online portal before the deadline of October 8, 2025, at 11:00 p.m. PT. The grants are unrestricted, offering true flexibility to grantees, and all applications must be completed in full for consideration.
