Bill Gates Says AI Is Already Transforming Work — ‘Less Labor’ Needed

REDMOND, Wash. — January 13, 2026 — Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates says artificial intelligence is having an unprecedented impact on society and the labor market, and that the traditional five-day workweek could eventually disappear as AI reshapes how work gets done. The comments come in his annual Year Ahead letter shared on his personal blog.

In the letter, Gates said AI’s capabilities are already allowing people and organizations to “make far more goods and services with less labor,” and he expects that trend to continue over the next several years. His remarks reflect both optimism about AI’s potential to increase productivity and concern about its disruptive effects on jobs and work structure.

Gates wrote that while economic output and innovation are growing, the nature of employment will evolve: as routine tasks become automated, fewer labor hours may be necessary. He suggested this could lead to a shorter workweek or other adjustments in how society organizes labor and leisure — though he didn’t prescribe a specific timeline or policy approach.

Despite these changes, Gates emphasized that the transition requires thoughtful preparation. He urged policymakers and business leaders to begin addressing workforce changes, wage distribution, and the social role of work to ensure AI’s benefits are shared broadly.

Gates has repeatedly highlighted the importance of governance around fast-developing technologies and the need for global cooperation to manage both the opportunities and risks posed by AI — from productivity shifts to issues like misinformation and security.

His remarks add to the ongoing debate about how AI will affect employment, with some experts forecasting major shifts in job requirements and work patterns over the next decade.
