Google has rolled out a new source-grounded writing feature in Google Docs, allowing users to anchor Gemini’s writing assistance to trusted sources directly linked within their documents.
The update gives users a way to generate contextual, reliable, and verifiable output by ensuring Gemini draws only from the files or links they’ve already referenced. This eliminates guesswork, keeps writing focused, and reduces the need to switch between tabs or manually copy details into prompts.
Smarter, Contextual Assistance
With this update, Gemini automatically identifies and curates a list of linked files in a document. Users can then choose to have Gemini’s writing help rely exclusively on those sources via the side panel in Docs.
This feature enables users to:
- Generate grounded content that directly reflects their linked materials.
- Query and summarize knowledge based on pre-selected sources for accurate, relevant results.
- Save time by using files they’ve already linked — no need to reattach them manually.
Previously, users had to add files individually to ground Gemini on specific content. That option still exists for files not linked in the document, but the new approach simplifies the workflow and ensures that key references aren’t overlooked.
Source-grounded writing keeps Gemini’s suggestions focused on the material you trust,” Google said. “It’s about making AI assistance more transparent, contextual, and useful for real writing workflows.”
Availability and Rollout
The source-grounded writing feature is available now in the side panel of Google Docs for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.
