October 21, 2025 — Samsung, in collaboration with Google, has announced the launch of the Galaxy XR, the first-ever device powered by Android XR — Google’s new operating system built for extended reality (XR) headsets and smart glasses.

The Galaxy XR marks a major milestone in immersive computing, combining Samsung’s hardware expertise with Google’s AI and Gemini assistant, offering users an intelligent, mixed-reality experience that seamlessly merges the digital and physical worlds.

Powered by Android XR: Blending the Physical and Digital

Android XR is designed to let users explore, work, and play across spatial environments. It integrates Gemini, Google’s conversational AI, directly into the interface — allowing natural interaction through voice, hand gestures, and eye tracking.

With Android XR, users can switch between full immersion and passthrough views, controlling how much of the real world they see. Since it’s based on the Android ecosystem, Galaxy XR users can access millions of apps from Google Play — including new XR-optimized experiences from major partners.

Among the supported apps and services at launch:

  • Reimagined Google apps like Maps, Photos, YouTube, Google TV, Chrome, and Meet

  • Streaming services such as Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Peacock

  • Immersive games from Mirrorscape, Owlchemy Labs, and Resolution Games

  • Over 50 new XR experiences from Adobe, Calm, Fox Sports, MLB, and more

Android XR is built on open standards, supporting OpenXR, WebXR, and Unity, enabling developers to create new kinds of spatial applications with existing tools.

Gemini Built for Spatial Computing

Gemini takes center stage on Galaxy XR. Through Gemini Live, the AI assistant can see and understand what’s happening around the user — responding in real time and taking contextual actions across apps.

“Gemini on Galaxy XR understands what you’re seeing and doing, making it easier to get help or take action with just a conversation,” said Shahram Izadi, VP & GM of XR at Google.

Three Ways Galaxy XR Redefines Experience

1. Enjoy Movies and Memories

Turn any space into a private cinema. Galaxy XR lets users watch immersive 180° and 360° YouTube videos or full-length films on Google TV on a virtual big screen. Google Photos can even transform 2D images and videos into 3D, spatial memories, letting users step back into personal moments.

Gemini can assist while watching — for example, answering questions about players during a sports highlight or providing information about a location on-screen.

2. Explore Your World in 3D

With Google Maps Immersive View, users can explore cities, landmarks, and terrain in rich 3D detail — from walking Tokyo’s streets to flying over the Grand Canyon. Using Circle to Search, users can simply circle virtual or real-world objects to learn more about them instantly, without breaking flow.

3. Create Your Ultimate Workspace

Galaxy XR creates a vast, multi-screen workspace where users can open and arrange apps like Chrome, Docs, and Spotify around them.

It supports keyboard and mouse pairing and PC linking for a complete desktop-like setup. New creative tools — such as Adobe’s Project Pulsar for immersive video editing and Concepts from TopHatch for sketching — are available at launch.

Gemini also acts as a creative assistant: users can brainstorm, request content organization, or even say “Hey Google, organize these windows” to automatically tidy their workspace layout.
