How to Move ETH from Coinbase to Base

Coinbase Account

Introduction

As Ethereum continues to scale, Layer 2 networks have become increasingly popular for faster and cheaper transactions. One of the most promising of these is Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 developed by Coinbase in partnership with Optimism.

If you're holding ETH in your Coinbase account, you might be wondering how to move it to Base so you can use it with dApps, pay lower gas fees, or explore Web3 more efficiently.

In this guide, we’ll walk through all the methods available to move ETH from Coinbase to Base step by step.

What is Base?

Base is a secure, scalable Layer 2 network built using the OP Stack. It’s designed by Coinbase to make crypto and decentralized applications accessible to the next billion users.

Key Benefits of Using Base

Lower gas fees than the Ethereum mainnet.
Faster transaction times.
Compatible with major wallets like Coinbase Wallet and MetaMask.
Directly connected to Coinbase products.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

Before moving ETH to Base, ensure you have.

Requirement	Details
Coinbase account	With ETH available for transfer
Crypto wallet	Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask, or any Base-compatible wallet
Internet connection	Stable access via mobile or desktop browser

Option 1. Transfer ETH Using Coinbase Wallet

The simplest and most direct method is using the Coinbase Wallet app, which supports Base natively.

Step-by-Step

Step 1. Download Coinbase Wallet.

iOS or
Android

Step 2. Connect Your Wallet to Coinbase.

In the Coinbase Wallet app, tap “Connect to Coinbase.”
Authorize the connection

Step 3. Transfer ETH.

In the Coinbase Wallet app, tap Receive
Choose ETH and copy the address
Go to your Coinbase account, tap Send
Paste the wallet address and send ETH

Step 4. Switch to Base Network.

In Coinbase Wallet, select Base from the network dropdown
Your ETH should now be visible under the Base network

Option 2. Withdraw ETH to MetaMask, then Bridge to Base

If you prefer using MetaMask or another wallet, you can still move ETH to Base in two steps: withdraw from Coinbase → bridge to Base.

Step-by-Step

Step 1. Withdraw ETH from Coinbase.

Open Coinbase and go to Assets > ETH > Send
Paste your MetaMask wallet address
Confirm and complete the transaction

Step 2. Use the Official Base Bridge.

Go to https://bridge.base.org
Connect your MetaMask wallet
Choose ETH and enter the amount to bridge
Confirm the transaction
Wait 1–5 minutes for completion

Option 3. Send ETH to a Base-Enabled Address

In some cases, Coinbase may support sending ETH directly to a wallet that already uses Base.

Important

Always check if the destination wallet can receive Base assets before sending. Sending ETH to an unsupported network could result in the loss of funds.

If supported,

Copy your Base wallet address
Paste it into Coinbase’s “Send” field
Select Base network (if available) and proceed

This feature is being rolled out gradually by Coinbase and may not be available to all users.

How to Confirm ETH Arrival on Base?

Once you’ve sent or bridged your ETH, you’ll want to confirm it landed on Base.

Tools You Can Use

Tool	What It Does	Link
BaseScan	View transactions & balances	basescan.org
Wallet App	Check your ETH balance	Use Coinbase Wallet or MetaMask
Block Explorer	View transaction hash details	Input your wallet address

Fees, Speed & Considerations

Factor	Description
Gas Fees	Usually lower on Base vs Ethereum mainnet
Speed	Bridge transactions take 1–5 minutes
Minimums	Always check Coinbase’s withdrawal minimums
Safety	Double-check all addresses before sending funds

Conclusion

Moving ETH from Coinbase to Base is now easier than ever. Whether you use Coinbase Wallet for direct transfers or MetaMask + Base Bridge for more control, you can start taking advantage of lower fees and faster transactions on one of Ethereum’s most promising Layer 2 solutions.
