Lock Objects in Power BI Service

When designing a Power BI report, one of the things that can quickly become frustrating is accidentally moving or resizing a visual that was already positioned exactly where you wanted it.

This becomes even more important when a report contains many visuals, buttons, images, shapes, or other design elements. Fortunately, Power BI provides Lock Objects in the Power BI Service to help prevent unwanted changes to report layouts.

What Is Lock Objects in Power BI?

Lock Objects is a Power BI feature that allows report authors to lock individual objects on a report page so that they cannot be accidentally moved or resized.

Objects that can be locked include items such as:

  • Charts and other visuals

  • Text boxes

  • Images

  • Shapes

  • Buttons

  • Slicers

  • Other report elements

The feature is particularly useful when you have finished designing the layout of a report and want to prevent objects from being accidentally repositioned.

Why Would You Need to Lock Objects?

Imagine you have created a sales dashboard with several cards across the top, a large sales trend chart in the middle, and multiple slicers on the left-hand side.

Everything is perfectly aligned.

You then need to edit one of the visuals. While doing so, you accidentally drag another visual a few pixels to the right.

The report may still work, but the layout is no longer aligned.

This is where Lock Objects becomes useful.

Instead of relying on manually positioning every object again, you can lock the objects once the layout is complete.

How to Lock Objects in Power BI Service

Open your report in the Power BI Service and enter Edit mode.

Navigate to the report page containing the objects you want to protect.

Once an object is locked, it cannot be accidentally moved or resized during normal report editing.

Lock Objects vs. Selection Pane

It is important to understand that locking an object and using the Selection pane solve different problems.

The Selection pane is useful when you want to manage the visibility and ordering of objects on a page.

For example, if several shapes overlap your visuals, the Selection pane can help you identify and select the correct object.

Locking, on the other hand, is primarily about protecting the position and size of an object from accidental changes.

The two features can therefore work together.

An Important Distinction

Locking objects does not mean that the underlying data or visual is protected from being edited in every possible way.

It is primarily a layout and positioning feature.

This is different from Power BI security features such as:

  • Row-level security (RLS)

  • Workspace permissions

  • Semantic model permissions

  • App permissions

  • Sensitivity labels

  • Build permissions

For example, locking a sales chart does not prevent someone with sufficient editing permissions from changing the chart's fields or configuration.

It simply helps prevent accidental changes to the object's position and size.

When Should You Use Lock Objects?

I normally recommend using it when a report has reached the final design stage.

It is especially useful for:

  • Executive dashboards

  • Financial reports

  • Operational dashboards

  • Reports with complex layouts

  • Reports containing many shapes and images

  • Reports using custom navigation

  • Pixel-perfect report designs

For reports that are still being actively designed, you may want to leave objects unlocked until the layout is finalized.
