Interesting how after the years passed WCF is not industry standard anymore as it's not a part of .NET core. Also, F# community is growing rapidly and I suspect that soon F# will become for .NET something similar as Scala for JVM.

Looks like Navision has limited scope. .NET on the other hand has wide range and you can pretty much do anything using .NET. Build Web, Windows, and enterprise applications.

I don't know much about a foreign exchange job. But .NET will have a good future as you can read in this article. Technologies like iOS, Android, Windows Universal apps, cloud, Security.. all have good future. Right now, if you have joined NIIT, your goal should be to learn basics. Scope is good but you must keep updating yourself. Your project may be in ASP.NET 2 but you must learn what is ASP.NET vNext and other things Microsoft is working on. Things change and a programmer must adapt and adopt.

Sorry to hear that. You still working in Silverlight? I don't see much future in it. Just some existing projects going on. But you can use same skills in Windows Phone and Windows Store apps.
It all depends on needs, Standard C# .NET you will need anyway. For example, you can use C# .NET to build mobile apps :). I would focus on getting first job and what job offers learning, learn that.

Are you doing job already? How many years of experience do you have? It depends on your needs. Do you need to earn money right away? If you're a young developer and need to earn right away, first think is to get a job and start focusing on learning and work. It can be anything. ASP.NET/MVC 4 is good. I suggest you focus on just one topic. Focus on programming if that's what you like. You have better chance for job in that. Once you're expert in one area, it will be much easier to get jobs. If you like hardware and hacking then try to get a job in that area and just focus on that. Learning too many things may not be a good idea in the beginning.

I am seeing a lot of demand for experienced C# developers in business world. Companies call me every day to find good C# and .NET developers. Java on the other hand I am not sure. May be I don't belong to Java world or there is not enough demand. Now, Java/Android is a totally different world. Android developers are in demand but their salaries have been not that good compare to C# and .NET. At least in Philadelphia area, where I live.
I see one question on ASP.NET or Android. Both have their places. Today, both are in demands. Android is more for apps while ASP.NET (and HTML 5, JavaScript) are being used to build business websites. Android can't build a website. It has to be HTML and JavaScript. This is a quite old post, but there's one thing I'd like to disagree: WPF is IMO not matured enough that there's no reason to add anything new. It might look mature on the API level, but under the covers there's a lot of space for improvements, like improving performance, replacing DX9 with DX11 for presentation, etc. And the problem with the current "app hype" is that the ecosystems are too limited and locked down to build any "serious" applications, not to speak of the roadblocks put in the way for publishing free software. There's a huge amount of utilities for Windows which are available for free, which make the (Win32) platform really valuable. But this is all going to vanish over time now that marketing enforces a certain way (via the proprietary Store) you can publish software for Windows. Now hobbyist developers have to pay to make their free tools available. What kind of logic is that?
Interesting to know about internals of WPF. In the applications world, where I have build systems, I found WPF much better than anything out there. There was nothing I wasn't able to do. I did not do any 3D or DX work. That is totally a different animal. I also did not have any memory and performance issues.

I recommend you focus on basics such as C# language first and then pick a track. Any track. Web with ASP.NET or mobile track seems easy enough to get started.
BizTalk Server is something I don't see much around. As per market, I am not sure where it is today but SQL Server obviously has lot of BI features/tools. SharePoint also has its own market.

Don't go for any third party controls, unless your project or company requires the software. A waste of time and your productivity. Learn how to develop custom controls, play with jQuery etc.. Otherwise go for when you want to join a product based company. Another best way to learn is by downloading any open source projects and start exploring. You can learn the coding standards, different patterns used etc.. lot of things...
Many Third party component vendors have died in last 5 years but some have survived. Who have survived they keep upgrading them with the latest trends. Some examples are Telerik, Infragistics, and DevExpress. If you noticed, they have mobile Toolkits for HTML 5 and JQuery. We will see.
Freshers like me always need someone to give Instructions for our Future, and when these Instructions are given by such seniors then I just have 2 words to say "It's Different". Thanks Sir.
I will say the future going to be MVC (with new list of third party light frameworks), Signal R, WCF, Entity Framework +, XAML (I don't like this, but 40% of my projects is in XAML only). Might going forward Web Form development would no longer in use, some thing new will come.
@Vinod, I don't think C# and XAML will go away anytime in near future. This is what Microsoft has spent $Billions in and technology is great. Just great.

.NET 5 is one of the fastest software development frameworks. .NET 5.0 is the fastest version of .NET released in the past 20 years.

As you can see in the above image, Microsoft plans to release a major version of .NET each year.

Last year i completed my Graduation in B.Com & after that i started working with an foreign exchange company. As my family thought that there is not a good scope in this field so i have taken admission in NIIT for DOT NET & IEEE. Is there any scope by doing this???? My unlce is in Accenture Company working as a IT General Manager so he told me to this thing. I am very much confused even after taking admission. Can you guide me???

Sir, I have 1year exp in .Net development. I am good at c# and asp.net , I m worried about the scope of this field in the future, that's why I m thinking to change my focus to database side which has less recession and mostly needed everywhere (as I think). This is making me confused in choosing the stream in which I have to grow. Please guide me to rite path.

@Manish: I think your knowledge is enough to get a good job. Be an expert in C# first and as you go on in your career path you will be learning more technologies. Try to learn Software Lifecycle...its also equally important.

@Mahesh: God's grace I had exposer to MVC and WPF. :)...but I had weekness on Silverlight. If you remember me,DJ and Diptyaman started working on Silverlight after October 2009 v2 release...so we saw it growing...it's like baby died an immature death :(

I am seeing a lot of demand for experienced C# developers in business world. Companies call me every day to find good C# and .NET developers. Java on the other hand I am not sure. May be I don't belong to Java world or there is not enough demand. Now, Java/Android is a totally different world. Android developers are in demand but their salaries have been not that good compare to C# and .NET. At least in Philadelphia area, where I live.

I see one question on ASP.NET or Android. Both have their places. Today, both are in demands. Android is more for apps while ASP.NET (and HTML 5, JavaScript) are being used to build business websites. Android can't build a website. It has to be HTML and JavaScript. So it depends on your interests and needs.

This is a quite old post, but there's one thing I'd like to disagree: WPF is IMO not matured enough that there's no reason to add anything new. It might look mature on the API level, but under the covers there's a lot of space for improvements, like improving performance, replacing DX9 with DX11 for presentation, etc. And the problem with the current "app hype" is that the ecosystems are too limited and locked down to build any "serious" applications, not to speak of the roadblocks put in the way for publishing free software. There's a huge amount of utilities for Windows which are available for free, which make the (Win32) platform really valuable. But this is all going to vanish over time now that marketing enforces a certain way (via the proprietary Store) you can publish software for Windows. Now hobbyist developers have to pay to make their free tools available. What kind of logic is that?

Don't go for any third party controls, unless your project or company requires the software. A waste of time and your productivity. Learn how to develop custom controls, play with jQuery etc.. Otherwise go for when you want to join a product based company. Another best way to learn is by downloading any open source projects and start exploring. You can learn the coding standards, different patterns used etc.. lot of things...

I will say the future going to be MVC (with new list of third party light frameworks), Signal R, WCF, Entity Framework +, XAML (I don't like this, but 40% of my projects is in XAML only). Might going forward Web Form development would no longer in use, some thing new will come.

Hi, nice article. But right now HTML 5 & JavaScript have replaced XAML & C# in Windows Phone and Windows 8 app. So, I don't think XAML is going to have a great future.

Karthik, WCF has a bright future. To connect all applications (Windows, Web, and Mobile), WCF is not only the glue but also the way to share and pass information. I should have mentioned it in the article. I will update the article but WCF is here to stay.
