Introduction To HoloLens

HoloLens is one of the most advanced technologies in the field of computer science as it made the holographic projection possible in a distinct way. In this blog, you will learn about the basic functionalities of HoloLens and its specifications. HoloLens is a device that basically is a User Interface Manager designed as a single package which consists of a mouse, keyboard, and other computer essentials necessary to function. HoloLens is a fully packed Windows 10 device which projects 3D imagery over your surroundings.

  • HoloLens can make 3D animals dance in your room
  • can show movies on your wall
  • browse the web and check your email on your table

Gaming is the major focus of HoloLens. Hand gestures are used to interact and control the game and users can physically explore or have a feel of the game world instead of moving the avatar through the traditional keyboard and mouse or the joystick. HoloLens is unconnected and has no wires for the transmission of data and power to the computer. There is no need for connection to a phone or any device that is wired or wireless.

Its lens is composed of three layers of glass coated with red, green, and blue. The processor of Hololens is a quad-core (eight cores) unit with 2MB of cache memory while its clock speed ranges from 1.44GHz to 1.6GHz. The Intel Cherry chip has a frequency of up to 2.4GHz. The Atom processor is a 14nm Airmont Microarchitecture-based chip designed for tabs. This is a 64-bit x86 processor.

In the latest version of HoloLens, there are three buttons

  • one for power
  • one for volume
  • one for adjusting contrast (clarity of the projection).

HoloLens has a high and stable CPU and GPU. HoloLens tries to improve the interaction that you have with your computer. Holograms are kind of Windows Universal apps which Microsoft is using for applications that work on any Windows 10 device, wether it is a personal computer, mobile, or a device like HoloLens and Oculus VR. Holograms are bright, dimensionally accurate, realistic and have a clear projection. Other sensors that HoloLens needs include -

  • gyroscope
  • accelerometer
  • Three-axis
  • magnetometer
  • An ambient light sensor

HoloLens includes a microphone for making up voice commands and environment sounds. The chip of HoloLens is very similar to the PrimeSense chip of Microsoft Kinect sensor. The chip of the Kinect device is capable of processing 2GB of data per second to read its surroundings. In HoloLens, the depth sensing is performed by an FOV depth sensor and a front time-offlight camera. This component consists of a light emitter.

  • An image sensor
  • Wide-angle lens
  • Driver electronics that is capable of syncing the light pulses.
