Authentication for Document Access in SharePoint

We have an Intranet SharePoint site. When logging into sharepoint, we dont give domain name. We simply use the format username and password.

But when accessing a document, we are not able to access without giving domain name.

When accessing a document we use the format domain\username and password.

My Questions are

Why the domain name is prompted during document access???

Is there a way to access documents in sharepoint without giving domain name??

Hi..
The site is already in the trusted site list. Still when opening document it is asking for domain name.

So, for time being we are logging using domain name...

Do the same .

In Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
In the Select a Web content zone to specify its current security settings box, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.

I cant choose option "Automatic Logon with current username and password".
(In case of common PC)
Is there any other option??
