brand new, looking to learn

Hello,

    I am looking for resources to gain a basic knowledge and learn about VB and C#. Any help/referrals to learning sources would be greatly appreciated.
    Things I am looking for (in general)

   a good 'first project' for me to be able to get a hands on understanding.
   references I can look at to gain an understanding of the how's and why's of programming,
and any other information you might find helpful.

Thank you again, I'll have something to read tonight. I downloaded Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition and going to start reading while I have that open so I can see and feel as I read. It'll get me back into the feel for the language(s) seeing as I haven't done any code since the days of the apple IIe and the vic 20. I enjoyed it back then, and with todays abilities, I'm certain I will enjoy it now and in the future.
