asp.net controls
ASP.NET Web server controls are objects on ASP.NET Web pages that run when the page is requested and that render markup to a browser. Many Web server controls resemble familiar HTML elements, such as buttons and text boxes. Other controls encompass complex behavior, such as a calendar controls, and controls that manage data connections.
asp.net ajax controls
AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. This is a cross platform technology which speeds up response time. The AJAX server controls add script to the page which is executed and processed by the browser.

ASP.NET AJAX Server Control bring functionality to an ASP.NET Web page such as :

1 re-rendering parts of a page
2 partial-page update
3 avoiding a full-page post back.
