The essential difference is that a variable of a reference type contains a reference (a type of pointer) to where an instance of that type is stored on the heap.

In contrast, a variable of a value type contains the actual instance itself (not a reference to it) and may be stored on either the heap or the stack, depending on the cirumstances.

Instances of reference types are subject to garbage collection when there are no longer any references to the instances in question.

Instances of value types are not garbage collected.
