display error message on label if data not in database

i am new in asp.net

When search records from the database via textbox by clicking the search button

if not enter any value in the textbox and click search it does not gives any error message like "value not present" or "something goes wrong "

Please try after modifying code as below

if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(whereclause) || whereclause =="")

{

lblmsg.Text = "something goes wrong...!!!!!!!!!!";

}
