This has been discussed extensively for more many years before Windows existed and in many forums.
One thing that would make it possible is processor serial numbers, but people protested and stopped it.
I am not familiar with the solutions that Microsoft offers, but if it is free I would use what they offer.
There are people and web sites that specialize in cracking software protection. There are PCI boards available at very low cost that can be used to watch the processor and memory so that it is impossible to hide anything. So I think it is not productive to spend much of your time on software protection.
