Sorry for creating such confusion for you sir.....

I m trying to check the performance test for any website e.g. www.xyz.com, Basically for web based applications there are three types of testing is necessary Load, Stress and Performance Tesing. load testing isn't done manually without using tools and stress is basically for checking the stability of the system and application.

Performance testing can be applied to understand the web site's scalability, or to benchmark the performance in the environment of third party products such as servers and middleware for potential purchase.

Performance testing is a rigorous usability evaluation of a working system under realistic conditions to identify usability problems and to compare measures such as success rate, task time and user satisfaction with requirements.

I just want to check the response time for that application under any no. of users, response time for any request, compatibility of application with system, response time for click event of its links etc and its working under some circumstances.
- expected load in terms of concurrent users or HTTP connections
- acceptable response time

I guess I need more details as to what you are trying to test, I wouldn't worry about linux that would be for load testing, what do you want to manually test the performance of?

Thanx for ur reply, but i want to know about web performance testing manually not about load because load testing is not be done without using any tool.

and how to create and use the linux box....

What do you want to test? how fast the website performs under a heavy user load? You can use a linux box and use "wget url" and put it in a loop, that would generate a massive amount of requests for the certain url.

Other than that most people test by launching a beta of the site and having actual users use it, I am sure they gather many logs in the process.
